Erie Insurance: 49th to 14th, the Study's Second-Largest Climb

A regional carrier that didn't crack the top fifty in Q2 finishes Q3 inside the top fifteen of 226 brands — and inside the top ten specifically on Meta AI. This teardown covers what moved, on which surface, and what a one-quarter jump does and doesn't establish.

The short version: Erie Insurance rose 35 ranks in Brainpan's Q2-to-Q3 comparison (49th → 14th among entities with at least 10 mentions in both quarters), with mention volume up 75 and citation volume up 28. On Meta AI specifically, Erie finishes 10th of 226 entities outright, with an AIVI™ score of 47.1, 62 mentions, 88 citation credits, a 61.3% recommendation rate, and 25 strong plus 7 moderate recommendations. We did not measure why — that's a diagnostic question, not a benchmark one.

rank positions gained, Q2 2026 to Q3 2026 — the second-largest climb of any entity in the comparison, behind only Farmers Insurance (+38).

Erie Insurance entered Q2 2026 ranked 49th among the study's continuity universe. In Q3, among entities with at least 10 mentions in both quarters — the threshold Brainpan uses to keep single-quarter rank comparisons from being dominated by noise — Erie finishes 14th. That's a jump of 35 positions, alongside a gain of 75 mentions and 28 citation credits over the same comparison.

What we measured, and what we did not

Before the rest of this teardown: this is a visibility-dimension analysis only. Brainpan also scores Sentiment and Accuracy this quarter, but neither is reported here, named to a specific brand, in any public-facing document — that detail is reserved for Brainpan's private brand diagnostic. Nothing below should be read as a statement about Erie's sentiment, claims accuracy, or customer experience; it is a measurement of how often, how prominently, and how authoritatively Erie Insurance was named in AI-generated answers to insurance-shopping prompts.

This is also a sample, not a census: one quarter, 300 prompts, six AI surfaces. Brainpan advises treating a single quarter's rank movement as directional until a second comparison cycle confirms it — see the callout on the main benchmark page.

3.

A top-ten finish, on one surface

The clearest, cleanest evidence of Erie's Q3 move is its outright top-ten finish on Meta AI, one of the study's six measured surfaces. Scores on each surface are normalized independently to that surface's own leading entity, so Meta AI's table isn't directly comparable to the five-engine Core benchmark above — but a top-ten finish on any surface, for a brand that didn't appear in Q2's top fifty at all, is a real signal.

Matches the national leaders on recommendation rate
Erie's 61.3% recommendation rate on this surface is the second-highest of the ten brands shown here, behind only Amica (66.7%) and ahead of USAA (61.4% — functionally tied), Nationwide (64.8%), and every major national carrier in the table except those two.
4.

Twenty-five strong recommendations, not just sixty-two mentions

Raw mention count tells you how often a name comes up. It doesn't tell you whether the AI engine is actually endorsing the brand when it does. On the same Meta AI surface, Erie's 62 mentions break down into 25 strong recommendations and 7 moderate recommendations, with 13 appearances in the top three results of a response.

Together, strong and moderate recommendations account for just over half of Erie's mentions on this surface (32 of 62) — meaning when an AI engine names Erie, it's doing more than listing it: more often than not, it's actively recommending it.

5.

A regional carrier, a national-scale jump

Erie Insurance operates in a little over a dozen states — it isn't a national carrier the way State Farm, Progressive, or GEICO are, and it wasn't a top-fifty name in Brainpan's Q2 universe at all. That context matters for reading the Q3 move correctly: this isn't a top-ten brand getting slightly more visible, it's a regional carrier crossing into a national AI-visibility conversation it wasn't part of three months ago.

That also means the comparison should be read carefully. A brand starting from a lower base has more room to move, in both rank-position terms and percentage terms, than one already near the top. The 35-rank gain is real and measured the same way as every other entity's — but it's a different kind of story than, say, Amica's four-rank climb inside an already-crowded top ten.

6.

Strategic diagnostic priorities

What this teardown can tell a carrier in Erie's position to go look at — not conclusions, starting points for a diagnostic.

  • Confirm the move is structural, not seasonal. A single quarter's data, even a strong one, isn't proof of a durable shift. The next edition's comparison will tell us whether 14th is a new baseline or a one-quarter spike.
  • Find out which surface is actually driving it. This teardown can show a top-ten finish on Meta AI specifically — it can't show, from public benchmark data alone, whether the other five surfaces moved the same way or whether one surface is doing most of the work.
  • Protect the recommendation rate, not just the mention count. Erie's 61.3% recommendation rate on Meta AI is already competitive with the national leaders. The diagnostic question for a brand in this position is usually how to extend that conversion rate as mention volume keeps growing, not how to get mentioned more.
  • Check citation sourcing. 88 citation credits against 62 mentions is a healthy ratio on its face — worth confirming which domains are actually earning those citations, and whether they're owned, earned, or third-party.

Data, method, and corrections

Primary source
Brainpan's Insurance AIVI™ Q3 2026 Benchmark: 226 entities (of 229 tracked brand candidates; 226 met the bar for canonical resolution with scoreable Q3 data), 300 stratified prompts, 1,800 responses, six AI surfaces. Erie-specific figures come from two distinct, independently-sourced views within that dataset: the official Q2-to-Q3 rank comparison (Section 1), and the Meta AI surface-specific leaderboard (Sections 3–4). These two views use different denominators and should not be arithmetically combined.
Scope
